The project for the Shantex Teaching Complex consists of two separate buildings and an underground carpark on a 13,000 m² site. The complex has to become a landmark that is visible from the Suzhou River. The concept of the building is to sew a carefully tailored "dress" around a pure, simple volume.
The metallic envelope is made with a range of materials, from very thin steel cables to thicker steel elements.
By meshing materials vertically and horizontally, it is possible to create a rigid structure that is separate from the building but which modifies the interior space. The project unifies the urban environment with a strong, visually appealing aesthetic and it projects the image of intelligent, environmentally responsive buildings.
The architectural concept has been developed with consideration to the image, identity and function of the Shantex company.
