ISTAT Headquarters, Istituto Nazionale di Statistica
Competition - 1st Prize

MC A won the international competition for the 60,000m2 headquarters of the central Statistics Office or ISTAT. The design is inspired by the geological conditions of the site that have been modified over time through excavation and stratification. The building is a monolithic low rise block that extends to the extremities of the site. The external façade appears homogenous but in fact it varies in material and transparency depending on its orientation and need for protection from the sun.
Inside the building, a cave-like space is carved. It is a distinctive feature of the project, a public area that brings green space to the core and is an intrinsic part of the environmental strategy. The building slab is perforated by atria that bring light and air to the office spaces. On the roof we find an extensive park with photovoltaic panels providing energy.
This energy efficient design saves 68% of CO2 emissions compared to a standard building.
